Afro-Cuban All Stars: Saturday, October 24

The Afro-Cuban All Stars will be performing at the Grand Theatre this Saturday, October 24th at 8:00PM.

Spanning musicians from four generations, with members aged 13 to 81, Afro Cuban All Stars leapt onto the international music scene with the 1997 release of A Toda Cuba Le Gusta , recorded Electronic Cigarette in the Buena Vista Social Club sessions. Juan de Marcos González will lead this ensemble in a performance of many styles of Cuban music, including bolero, chachachá, salsa, son montuno, timba, guajira, danzón, rumba and abakua.

Festival Addition: Jazz Composition and Arrangement clinic

We are pleased to announce that we have recently finalized the details for a Jazz Composition and Arrangement clinic at Queen’s University on Friday, October 2nd from 2:30 to 4:30 P.M. in room 120 of Harrison-LeCaine Hall at 39 Bader Lane electronic cigarette safty.

The free clinic run by Canadian jazz icons Don Thompson and Reg Schwager is open to everyone.  This is a unique opportunity to learn from the masters.  If you or someone you know might be interested, please pass the info on.

Kingston Jazz Festival – October 1-4


The 2009 Jazz Festival will showcase the diverse talents of multi-instrumentalist Don Thompson. He is featured Thursday, Saturday and Sunday during the festival. This year’s Festival is the first to be done in collaboration with the Grand Theatre, who have scheduled an Oliver Jones/Ranee Lee concert for the Friday night.

The festival begins on Thursday, October 1st, with a duo performance featuring Don Thompson on bass and vibes and Reg Schwager on guitar. In a unique twist, they will share the main stage of the Grand Theatre with the audience, who will be seated bistro-style at tables. Drinks will be available on-stage. This very different, intimate setting will seat 120 people, so it’s best to book early. Each table seats four people and tables can be purchased together.

As mentioned, Friday October 2nd will feature Oliver Jones and Ranée Lee again at the Grand Theatre.  After the main show be sure to catch the up-and-coming Toronto band Yuka for a free show at Aroma Resto-Winebar.  (10:30 PM start)

On Saturday, October 3rd, Don Thompson will return to the stage with a veritable who’s who reverse phone lookup for cell of Canadian jazz in a nonet featuring:

The first half of this concert will feature Duke Ellington compositions while the second half will feature the compositions by the great Canadian trumpeter, Kenny Wheeler.

Again,Aroma will host Yuka in the free after-show on the Saturday night.

Finally, the Festival will draw to a close on Sunday, October 4th, with a 2:00P.M. show at the Wilson Room of the Kingston Library. The final show will feature Don Thompson’s famous quartet of Reg Schwager, Jim Vivan and Terry Clarke.

Sara Hamilton and David – August 30th

Sara Hamilton and David conclude their weekly summer booking at Confederation Place Hotel next Sunday.  If you haven’t seen them recently, you should know that in addition to bassist Bob Arlidge, they have added a percussionist to the mix.

The result is a delightful quartet of keys, bass, percussion, flute, and of course both Sara and David’s formidable vocal talents Xanax covering the gamut of jazz standards.

Matt Newton Quartet – Sunday June 14 @ The Mansion

The Matt Newton Quartet will be playing The Mansion on Sunday, June 14th at 8 pm with just a $5 cover.  The show is part of the group’s CD release tour for their debut album “Push”, available June 11th from CD Baby, iTunes Klonopin Online and from the musicians themselves.
