May 9: HomeGrown Live – Jazz at Monte’s starting at 2pm!

Hello Jazz Fans!

The Kingston Jazz Society will once again be lending a helping hand at this year’s HomeGrown Live music festival. This Saturday you can catch amazing local jazz starting at 2pm at Monte’s.

If you’d like to sample everything that Kingston’s talented musicians have to offer, be sure to check out the full HomeGrown Live schedule.

We would like to send out a special thank you to Jon Stewart for once again arranging the schedule for the day, to Roger Viner for handling the technical needs all day, to SoundWorks for donating the PA, and most of all to the musicians for donating their time to this great cause and wonderful annual celebration of their talents.

Spotlight on Hannah Barstow

Hannah Barstow, a native of Napanee, has recently received an ARCT in Piano Performance with first class honours. A jazz pianist and vocalist, she is currently studying in the Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance program on piano at the University of Toronto on a full scholarship

Spotlight on the Groove Queens

The Groove Queens are a new Kingston trio of veteran performers Patty Kenny, Val Hamilton, and Jenica Rayne. Patty has been playing bass in several Kingston bands for many years now, most recently “Yo Mama” and “Joplinesque.” Val puts incredible energy and enthusiasm into her music and LOVES jazz. Val is a member of the Kingston Ceili Band, the Mowtown Band Heatwave, and the Blues Swing Quartet, which performs regularly at Monte’s. Jenica is a passionate songwriter, accomplished guitarist, and seasoned performer who has released several critically acclaimed CDs.

Spotlight on Street52

Street52 is new, up and coming, jazz project from Kingston, Ontario, that will grab your attention from the first note to the last bow of the night. This group of four has set out on a journey to explore the inner and outer spaces of jazz, bringing the music of the last century alive with new combinations of sound, rhythm and form. Jazz, blues and Jazz, filtered through the prism of modern music.

The Kingston Jazz Society will be highlighting many of the outstanding local acts that will be performing as a part of next Saturday’s HomeGrown Live. The tunes kick off at 3pm at Monte’s. We hope to see you there!


 

Spotlight on Chantal Thomspon

Chantal Thompson is a local jazz and multidisciplinary artist who recently moved back to Kingston from NYC, where she recorded her first solo jazz cd with many great players from New York and Kingston. She has toured around previously with other bands such as directions, a seven piece fusion band, playing the Montreal jazz festival and the Jazz Café in London England, and was remixed by numerous international dj’s. On her latest cd Sirens & Stars, Chantal re- imagines beautiful soulful standards and originals in the cool jazz genre, with a bluesy introspection. “People have described the record as having a cinematic quality and this is something I am definitely interested in exploring.” To sum it up, Nina Simone, Billy Holiday and Ornette Coleman.

Spotlight on Spencer Evans

Spencer Evans was born in Picton as a Centennial Project. After attending Queen’s B.Mus programme for four years,he worked around Kingston in a variety of bands,most of which featured Joe Chithalen on bass. Spencer toured across Canada with Pat Temple,and then an international tour with Cowboy Junkies,taking him across Europe,and allowing him to play some amazing shows,including concerts with John Prine,and an appearance on the Tonight Show. He performed with Alex Pangman and Jeff Healey at the Montreal Jazzfest,and with Maria Muldaur at Toronto’s Swing Fest at Harbourfront. He has recently recorded and toured with Sarah Harmer,and his clarinet is featured on recordings by Meaghan Smith,Jill Barber,and the Good Lovelies.He loves funk,swing,and blues with a nod to Ray Charles,Benny Goodman,Mose Allison,New Orleans Jazz,and the three Louis'(Prima,Armstrong,Jordan).

Spotlight on Georgette Fry

Veteran blues singer, Georgette Fry, steps out of semi-retirement to sit in and croon a few toons with some of her fave local jazz players, some/many/most? of whom also join her as part of a current project, a stage show that pays musical homage to the late, great Etta James.
