Live @ Your Library – May 3rd

Kingston native Mike Allen makes a long awaited return to town to close our 6th annual Live @ Your Library Series next Sunday May 3rd with his new project:

Described by the Globe and Mail as “a supremely melodic improviser,” Vancouver saxophonist Mike Allen has become an important name on the Canadian jazz scene. His album “Love One Another” was hailed as the #1 Canadian Jazz Album of 2005 by the Ottawa Citizen.

Guitar-great Jake Langley is now based in New York and gained international attention touring the world with the renowned Joey Defrancesco Trio.

Young-guns Patrick Reid-bass and Mark Nelson-drums round out the band; They’re best known for their work with the outstanding Montreal-based group “Field Trip Trio” who are regular visitors to Kingston.

The afternoon of joyous, swinging music will be steeped in the tradition of the great saxophone-led groups of Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, and Mike’s former teacher and musical mentor, Joe Henderson.

Live @ Your Library – April 26th

The Live @ Your Library series continues on April 26th with a very exciting show featuring the incredible Seamus Blake from NYC on saxophone backed by a stellar all-Canadian band consisting of Chris Gestrin from Vancouver on piano, Nick Fraser from Toronto on drums, and John Geggie from Ottawa on bass.  Seamus is a rare talent and is not to be missed.

Tickets are $15 and are available from Brian’s Record Option, through the Grand Theatre box office (613-530-2050) and at the door.

April Jazz at Monte’s

Monte’s continues its strong commitment to Kingston area jazz this month.  In addition to the Friday afternoon show, Sara Hamilton and David share the stage with bassist Bob Arlidge on Sundays from 4:00 – 7:00.

April’s Friday lineup is as follows:

All Friday shows are free and run from 5:30-8:30.
